  • People are only exposed to radiation in medical settings. You don’t have to be a survivor of a nuclear disaster to be exposed to radiation. In fact, people are exposed to natural radiation on a daily basis. This radiation comes from the sun, distant stars and even the Earth itself in such small increments that it is not immediately harmful. This type of radiation is actually necessary for life.
  • X-rays deliver high doses of radiation and are outdated. This is two myths in one. First, today’s digital x-ray imaging delivers extremely low doses of radiation. To put it into perspective, the average American is exposed to approximately 620 millirem of radiation a year. An x-ray of the pelvis puts out about 70 millirem while an x-ray of the hand or foot puts out only 0.5 millirem. X-rays are definitely not outdated, as they comprise about 50 percent of all imaging tests performed. This is because x-rays still provide a quick yet reliable image of the bones and chest.
  • Pregnant women can’t have x-rays. While it’s true that radiation can be dangerous for a fetus, especially in the first trimester, this danger can be avoided by using correct precautions such as a lead apron over the mother’s abdomen. A pregnant woman can have x-rays of the extremities, no problem.
  • MRIs are best because they don’t use radiation. It’s true that MRIs do not put out radiation. That’s because magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a magnetic field instead. However, just because an MRI is radiation-free doesn’t automatically make it the better choice. There are a wide range of imaging tools such as x-rays, CT scans, ultrasound and MRI which are each the best for different situations. For example, x-rays are better for looking at bones while MRIs are better with imaging soft tissue such as organs and ligaments. CT scans deliver the highest amount of radiation, between 200 to 1,000 millirem depending on the area of the body scanned, but are best for detecting cancers, among other conditions.
